Sobre la tradición punk de escupirse tontamente entre sí

Colgué la campera de cuero, los borceguíes y los pantalones achupinados hace más o menos una década, cuando el siglo XXI recién despuntaba y miraba los años apenas pasados con una mueca de incredulidad y hastío: ¿Qué ha sido todo este gran desperdicio? El corte fue simultáneamente gradual y tajante. Había pasado buena parte de mi tiempo de vida —el período que suele asociarse a la adolescencia y la primera juventud— en ese espacio a veces material y a veces simbólico que podríamos llamar “la escena punk”, y de repente todo aquello se me antojaba ajeno, superficial, intelectualmente tacaño. Todos esos gestos y todos esos relatos legitimados, ahora se me hacían huecos y vacíos.

Digo que fue gradual y tajante porque algunas prácticas no se sacan de encima de un día para otro, y porque otras prácticas sí es posible cortarlas de cuajo apenas asoman sus feas cabezas. Algunas músicas, algunas estéticas, algunas educaciones de la conducta y algunos gustos por determinados artefactos culturales perduraron a través de los años, perduran todavía hoy. Otras prácticas, no. De todas ellas, nombraría la asistencia a conciertos. Si debiera enumerar los conciertos a los que fui arrastrado en la última década, casi siempre por obligación y sin muchos deseos de estar allí, ostentaría un promedio de uno, o de medio, por año. Y creo estar abultando la cifra.

Mentiría si afirmara que echo de menos esos conciertos. No lo hago. Mentiría además si no recordara que ya en ese momento me incomodaba compartir oxígeno con tantos organismos culturales tan pobremente desarrollados. Una de las grandes paradojas del punk rock es que sus adherentes enfatizan la idea de agudizamiento del pensamiento, de libertad intelectual, de compromiso reflexivo, de responsabilidad artística y política, y al mismo tiempo cuentan en sus filas con los más obtusos exponentes de la especie humana, individuos cuya idea de libertad intelectual, de compromiso reflexivo, etc., se reduce a apedrear la puerta de una discoteca para que los dejen pasar sin pagar entrada. Se le puede perdonar a un adolescente descarriado, justamente porque adolece de un juicio social formado, completo, consumado, propio de adultos; verlo en tipos más grandes ya es triste.

De todas las gansadas que se repiten en nombre del estereotipo punk, escupirse tontamente es una de las peores. Escuché muchas justificaciones al respecto: que es una forma de saludar a los músicos; que es un modo de repudiar la distancia entre artista y espectador; que es un rito de pertenencia; que los músicos lo toman como un signo de camaradería. Por supuesto que ningún músico medianamente equilibrado estaría de acuerdo con esto. Montones de ellos suspenden conciertos, se niegan a tocar bises, reducen el repertorio a causa de esta práctica repulsiva. Cuando Sex Pistols tocó en Buenos Aires, en diciembre de 1996, habían colocado dos grandes ventiladores de cara al público para devolver los escupitajos a su lugar de origen. El cantante del grupo vasco la Polla Records, Evaristo Páramos Pérez, salía al escenario con un gran paraguas en el que había escrito una exhortación —no la recuerdo textualmente— para que el público escupiera a la puta de su madre. Al final era peor, dicho sea al pasar, el pobre hombre acababa cubierto de flema nomás abría su paraguas.

En su libro I was a teenage Sex Pistol (1990), el bajista de Sex Pistols, Glen Matlock, contaba que la odiosa costumbre de las salivadas fue inaugurada en unos conciertos de 1976, en el 100 Club londinense, cuando el baterista del grupo colega The Damned, un tal Rat Scabies, empezó a expectorar a la audiencia y la audiencia le devolvió la gentileza. “Así fue inventada esa gran tradición de las escupidas”, escribió Matlock.

Aunque haya excepciones en uno y otro sentido, siempre pensé que la rutina debe tomarse como un síntoma de violencia colectiva, de esa mezcla de permisividad e impunidad que instaura el anonimato del gran número. Excepto que las cosas hayan cambiado demasiado en tiempos recientes, no verás, en un concierto punk para veinte o treinta personas, que algún espectador se ponga a escupir a quien está tocando en el escenario o en el rincón que hace las veces de escenario. Sucede más bien cuando cierta cantidad de asistentes anónimos esconden, vuelven inidentificable, al escupidor. También, cuando se imponen otras distancias; por ejemplo, la distancia del idioma o de la procedencia del músico escupido.

El espectáculo de músicos expectorados, incluso de músicos expectorados devolviendo las expectoradas, no tiene ninguna relación con el arte, el entretenimiento, las provocaciones o las rupturas culturales; es una tontería y nada más.

Y ahora que lo escribo, ya recuerdo por qué razón —entre otras— colgué la campera de cuero, los borceguíes y los pantalones achupinados.

Never Mind the Bollocks, Here's the Sex Pistols is the first and only album recorded by the Sex Pistols, a highly influential and controversial English punk band. The album was released on October 28, 1977 on the Virgin Records label, amid controversy arising from the use of the obscenity (in British English) "bollocks" in its title.

The album comprises studio demos and chatter recorded with Dave Goodman during 1976 and early 1977, while original bass player Glen Matlock was still a member of the group. Animal Boy is an album by the Ramones. It featured the songs "My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)", written as a protest of President Ronald Reagan's visit to the Bitburg cemetery in West Germany; "Somebody Put Something in My Drink", written by Richie Ramone, the band's drummer from 1983–1987; and "Love Kills", Dee Dee Ramone's ode to deceased friend Sid Vicious. Dee Dee sings lead vocals on tracks 3 and 9.
Three songs on the album were co-written by Jean Beauvoir, formerly of the Plasmatics.
The music video for the song "Something to Believe In" featured a mock charitable event entitled "Hands Across Your Face", a parody of Hands Across America.

Ramones - Too tough to die (1984)

Too Tough to Die is the eighth album by the Ramones, released in 1984 (see 1984 in music). It is the first album recorded with Richie Ramone. It is regarded by All Music Guide as as "the last great record they would ever make" [1] and as a particular triumph for Dee Dee Ramone, who wrote or co-wrote nine of the album's 13 tracks. In this album, the Ramones were trying to get a little bit into the '80s hardcore punk scene.
The album cover is a cultural reference to the movie A Clockwork Orange; the band backlit at the mouth of a tunnel echoes the scene in the film where Alex and his droogs attack a derelict.[2] The song title "Durango 95" is also the name of the car driven by Alex in A Clockwork Orange.
The album includes the two Ramones songs "Wart Hog" and "Endless Vacation" sung by Dee Dee Ramone. The lyrics to "Wart Hog" were not allowed to be shown because the record company felt they were too offensive.

Subterranean Jungle is the seventh studio album by punk band the Ramones. It was released in February 1983[1] (see 1983 in music) and peaked at position eighty-three on the Billboard album music chart.[2] It was re-released on August 20th, 2002 on CD by Rhino Records.
"Time Bomb" featured Dee Dee's first lead vocal on a Ramones album. "Little Bit o' Soul" was a cover of a song originally recorded by The Music Explosion in 1967. "I Need Your Love" was also a cover song, originally recorded by The Boyfriends, as was "Time Has Come Today", originally recorded by The Chambers Brothers in 1968.
Marky Ramone was dismissed from the band during the production of the album. He can be seen lurking almost invisibly behind the window on the front album cover. Billy Rogers filled in for him on at least one song. In the music videos for "Psycho Therapy" and "Time Has Come Today," Richie Ramone replaces him.

Pleasant Dreams is the sixth album by the Ramones. It was released in 1981 (see 1981 in music) by Sire Records. Pleasant Dreams reached #58 on the US Billboard album charts. It is frowned upon by guitarist Johnny Ramone because to him it sounds "too slick" and is generally viewed as part of the Ramones pop experimentation.

Ramones - End of the century (1980)

End of the Century is the fifth album by the Ramones. It was produced by the famed Phil Spector and was released on February 4, 1980. This album is generally seen as a departure from the bands' original formula of energetic punk rock, and an attempt at reaching commercial success.
After Spector got interested in the band, he offered to produce the next record. Vocalist Joey Ramone was an avid fan of his early work, including many girl groups and a Beatles record. The result was a change in direction of the band's sound. As an attempt at a Top 40 record and mainstream acceptance, its songs are more cleanly produced and longer in length, averaging around three minutes.
The album peaked #44 on the US Billboard Top 100, and peaked #14 on the UK Album charts, making the band's best-selling album in both countries. Even though its highest charting single was "Baby, I Love You", the more known songs are "Do You Remember Rock 'n' Roll Radio?" and Spector's version of "Rock 'n' Roll High School".

Road to Ruin is the fourth album by the Ramones. It was released on September 22, 1978. It was recorded in May and June of 1978 at Media Sound in New York.
This album shows a more "classic" pop sound as well as a shift to a more serious personality to the music, a theme that would remain in later albums, most notably 1980's End of the Century. The influence of 1960s girl groups is in evidence, as well as the influence of The Byrds on tracks including "Don't Come Close" and the cover of "Needles And Pins", originally by Jackie DeShannon and later a hit for The Searchers.
The album also contains the track "I Wanna Be Sedated", one of the band's most popular and beloved tunes.
This is their first album with Marky Ramone on drums, after original drummer Tommy Ramone left due to fatigue from touring.

It's Alive is a live album by the Ramones. It was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre, London, on December 31, 1977, and released in April 1979. The title is a reference to the 1974 horror movie of the same name. It was originally released as a 2-LP set and draws material from their first three albums. Four concerts at the Rainbow Theatre were recorded, but the New Year's Eve was chosen due to the fact that ten rows of seats were thrown at the stage after the concert and it was considered the best of the performances at the venue. This album is considered one of the best live albums in the history of rock 'n' roll.

Ramones is the self-titled debut album by the Ramones. It was released on April 23, 1976 by Sire Records.
After Seymour Stein of Sire Records signed the band in the autumn of 1975, the band began to record their debut the following winter. Ramones was recorded quickly and cheaply at Plaza Sound, Radio City Music Hall, New York. The band recorded February 2 – 19, 1976 on a budget of only $6,200. The template of guitar and bass in opposite channels with the drums in the middle was based on early albums by The Beatles and Cream.
Many radio disc jockeys were supposedly put off by the records' supposedly primitive, frantic music and often bizarre themes. The album did not receive heavy airplay, and it only peaked at number #111 on the Billboard's North American Pop Albums chart upon its April 23 release.
